Edmonton, Alberta (April 1, 2008) - Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. (Primus Canada) is opening its newest Internet Data Centre (IDC) in Edmonton, Alberta. The new facility addresses the demand from local small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) for better IT support by housing and managing mission critical computer server hardware and software assets in the province. To demonstrate further its commitment to the Alberta market, Primus has added 12 sales employees and five network staff in Edmonton, and seven sales employees in Calgary. “Our SMB customers have told us that in order to stay competitive, they need to avoid a crisis of complexity – too many IT options and not enough clarity,” said AJ Byers, Senior Vice President, Primus Business Services. “With Alberta’s economy growing so quickly SMBs need complete solutions that allow them to focus on their core business.” Small businesses with fewer than 100 employees and medium-sized firms that have between 100 and 500 employees make up 97.7 per cent of businesses in Canada. But recent reports have indicated they often lack resources to dedicate to IT staff and infrastructure. This impedes their ability to increase their productivity and grow their businesses. With Alberta’s economy experiencing such a boom, it is important that SMBs not be left behind. "Rising oil and gas prices have led to an economic boom in Alberta with unprecedented levels of capital investment. This rise is creating a snowball effect, leading to increased investment in many industry areas including IT and Managed Services,” said Sebastien Ruest, Vice President of the Services Research group at International Data Corporation Canada. “As a result, International Data Corporation Canada is seeing improved performance among many of the services firms located in Alberta and a migration of new entrants into the province." In its first phase, Primus Canada’s data centre has 4,000 square feet of raised floor space with options for 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, full-sized and custom cages for collocation space. The data centre resides in an unmarked location with a single entrance and a two-stage credential entry process supported with a biometric security system, card access control and individually locked cabinets for uncompromised security. The state-of-the-art Internet Data Centre employs environmentally friendly features and design elements to minimize its environmental footprint, delivering power in multiple configurations to maximize server power efficiency. Reduced energy consumption is made possible with highly efficient UPS equipment and transformers that minimize energy waste. Provisioning practices balance loads across phases of power to lessen overdraw. Primus Canada’s new, larger sales force will allow the Company to service the majority of the province, allowing SMBs in both urban and suburban settings to take advantage of Primus Business Services’ offerings and realize business efficiencies.
